How It Works

How This Calculator Works

  1. 1

    Enter system size

Enter the solar system capacity in kW (e.g., 5 for a 5 kW system).

  2. 2

    Select system type

Choose on-grid (grid-tied, most common), off-grid (with battery backup, no grid), or hybrid (battery + grid).

  3. 3

    Select phase

Choose single-phase (1Ø, for homes up to 5 kW) or three-phase (3Ø, for commercial or systems above 5 kW).

  4. 4

    Select mounting type

Choose rooftop fixed tilt (most common), rooftop elevated, or ground mount. This determines mounting structure quantities.

  5. 5

    View and export BOM

The complete BOM with quantities is shown instantly. Click "Export BOM" to download as CSV (for procurement) or PDF (for customer/project files).

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Solar BOM (Bill of Materials)?
A Solar BOM is a complete list of all equipment and materials required to install a solar PV system. It includes solar panels, grid-tie inverter, DC and AC cables, MC4 connectors, DC and AC MCBs, surge protection devices, earthing kit, mounting structure, and net meter. The BOM is essential for procurement, cost estimation, and site planning.
How many solar panels are needed for a 5 kW system?
A 5 kW solar system using 545W panels requires 10 panels (5000W ÷ 545W ≈ 9.17, rounded up to 10). With 400W panels, you would need 13 panels. The exact count depends on the panel wattage selected. Our BOM Generator calculates this automatically based on your inputs.
What inverter size do I need for a 5 kW solar system?
For a 5 kW on-grid solar system, you need a 5 kW string inverter. Standard inverter sizes in India are 1 kW, 2 kW, 3 kW, 5 kW, 8 kW, 10 kW, 15 kW, 20 kW, 25 kW, and 50 kW. For systems above 10 kW, multiple inverters or central inverters may be used.
What cable size is required for solar DC wiring?
For most residential solar systems (up to 10 kW), 4 sq.mm DC solar cable is standard for string wiring. For systems above 10 kW or with long cable runs, 6 sq.mm or higher may be needed. AC output wiring uses 4–10 sq.mm based on inverter rating and distance to the main panel.
What earthing components are needed for a solar system?
A standard solar system earthing kit includes a GI earthing electrode (pipe or plate type), GI earthing wire (6–16 sq.mm), earthing clamps, and earthing compound. Separate earthing is required for the panel mounting structure, inverter body, and DC system — at minimum 3 earthing points for residential systems.
